Summer Stage–Central Park–New York, NY

Summer Stage in Central Park is one of those great things you’ve got to do while you live in NYC.  While most New Yorkers clear out of the city in August in search of beach breezes, those who stay here can enjoy the finer things in life–Shakespeare in the Park, Summer Stage, and even cloud sculptures on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  On Monday night, we arrived in Central Park early enough to snag a great blanket spot and enjoy a few cold beers while listening to the fine tunes of The Lumineers and The Milk Carton Kids. But as the place filled up, we had to stand and fight to maintain any visibility of the stage.  It’s times like that when it’s really unfortunate to be 5’4″.  Especially when a 6’4″ guy is planted directly in front of you (see below).  The place went nuts when the headliner, Old Crow Medicine Show, took the stage and they did not disappoint.  We were introduced to them a few years back by a friend, who happens to be the sister of our favorite band member, Ketch Secor. Based in Nashville, OCMS plays “their own brand of American roots music with a rock and roll attitude.”  Bluegrass/folky/roots, however you slice it, they are fun to watch.  You want to dance and sing to every one of their songs…they just JAM on every instrument in their arsenal.  They played a bunch of new tunes from their just released album, Carry Me BackThanks to my hubby for the final shot–it does pay to be 6’6″.  And here’s to outdoor concert sunsets (the best), outdoor concert bathroom lines (the worst), and to getting out and making the most of August…3 more weeks!

Perfection- New York, NY

A friend of mine recently began writing a great new blog–“new” being the key theme–she just moved to a new town and has a new baby, new job, and new house in a new town.  That is A LOT of new.  Life always seems to come in waves like that–in June 2007, I finished grad school, got married, packed up to move from Boston to Manhattan, and started looking for a new job.  Did I mention that in those same 4 weeks, I also chaired our 5th college reunion and was the maid of honor in my cousin’s wedding? June 30th, my wedding day, felt like the finish line.  Holy overwhelming.

Last week, Laura wrote a great post about putting pressure on herself to be perfect–as a wife, a mom, a teacher–and feeling paralyzed by the fear of failure.  I could relate in the larger sense (starting a new business is hard) and even in the smaller sense…every time I post an image on here, I think to myself, “Wait, is this good enough to post?”  I shy away from posting I-Phone photos (the dreaded and semi blurry result of the Iphone 4) because I imagine someone will say “she’s a PHOTOGRAPHER? Why is that picture so blurry?!?”  But I’m trying to get over it. Because sometimes the photos on my phone are pretty funny or tell a great story about my day.  Rest assured that if you hire me, I’ll bring my professional camera and lenses and not just my I-Phone!☺  And I know a thing or two about focusing.  Here’s to getting over perfection and being ok with it.  And trying really hard without being afraid of failure. Happy Monday.

Fine Art Friday–Barn Love

I love barns and have some crazy romantic fantasy of buying an old house in the countryside and turning the barn into an awesome studio/work space.  Until then, I can just lust after them–their texture, history, and rugged beauty.  My heart skips a little when they are part of a wedding reception (left).  This one came complete with wrought iron chandeliers and an amazing loft that allowed me to shoot funky dance photos from above.

Welcome to August–I hope you can get some country livin’ in this weekend.  Or maybe just get those toes in the sand.  We’re maintaining our summer road warrior status and are off for yet another 4 day adventure.  Happy Friday!

Love the picture on the right.

Perhaps your love of barns came from visits to Mary and Edith’s.

Anniversaries

Wedding season is in full swing, which also means that anniversaries are popping up left and right.  I love thinking back to how many friends were married on the last few days of July (different years of course, but I can currently count 3…which I know because my husband’s birthday was yesterday and he claims to spend every birthday weekend at a wedding!), and recalling their wedding details and moments.  We’ve spent the last weekend of July at weddings in historic Cambridge, MA, across the country in romantic and foggy Carmel, CA, and close to home in the urban oasis of Fort Trynon Park with gorgeous views of the GW bridge and Hudson River.

I was married on a popular June wedding weekend and thus have celebrated a few of our anniversaries toasting our friends and welcoming them into the end of June anniversary club.  I also got married on the same weekend as my sister, (I assure you, not A Very Brady Wedding; the events were 5 years apart), and we decided to jointly celebrate our 5th and their 10th this year in Bermuda.  We got a great deal on Jetsetter and spent four blissfully child-free nights at the Pink Beach Hotel.  It was an awesome trip complete with cocktail hours featuring competitive I-pod playlists (I won!), daily tennis matches (I lost!), relaxing beach time, white knuckled moped touring, and my fave…forced/semi-embarrassing photo shoots at sunset on the beach.  Of course these yielded some beautiful photos but also some funny ones.  My brother-in-law is known for his uncontrollable blinking and half smiling during any photo taking, and for getting so sunburned that I have to turn every photo into black and white.  He was a good sport though, and we got some keepers…here are a few.  He even turned the tables on us and, while sporting his BRIGHT yellow pants, took over my camera like a Sports Illustrated beach photographer gone wild, in order to snap a few of me and my husband.  Nice work Peter…love your shooting form! Happy anniversaries to all of you summer brides and grooms out there.  Here’s to you.

Fine Art Friday–Flying By–Okavango Delta, Botswana

The summer seems to be flying by…August is next week? eeek!  We’ve been all over the place with weddings and travel, but I feel like I blinked and summer is 2/3 over, and that panicked feeling that August brings is oh so near.  Therefore, I’ll post an image that evokes that feeling of time zipping past you in one big blur.  I shot this on a small boat as we raced past high, luscious grasses in the Moremi Game Reserve on the gorgeous Okavango Delta in Botswana.  If you look closely, you can see the reflection of the boat in the grasses.  Even if it’s been a big blur, I hope your summer has been full of memorable events and lots of photos.  Happy Olympic Friday–enjoy the Opening Ceremonies!
