What to do on a rainy day at the beach? Throw on a Boden hoodie, hide on the porch, and have a photo shoot! My nephew has always been a good sport in front of my camera. For this one we played the “whatever you do, you are NOT allowed to smile” game. As you can see, he only lasted about 1.2 seconds. I hope you are enjoying your final weeks of summer, rain or shine. Because even on a rainy day at the beach, you are still at the beach! Happy Monday.
Here’s a little adventurous image for your Friday. I took this from the front seat of a makuro (local dug out canoe made of one piece of wood) just after being absolutely drenched in a rainstorm. A makuro is almost like a gondola in Venice–the guide pushes off the bottom of the shallow delta river with a long pole. After this excursion they told us that hippos (who surprisingly kills the most humans in Africa) and crocodiles (also pretty dangerous) were just lurking around us. I was pretty psyched that they told us this after the fact. I used this image for the wrap around cover of an album I made and I love the way it literally leads you in to the book. I hope you have an adventure filled weekend!

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s a Farm Share pick up day! We joined a CSA (community supported agriculture) that runs from June-October and the last few pick-ups have been amazing. I brought my camera last week because it’s hard to put into words just how gorgeous all of this fresh produce is. Our share comes from an awesome family farm on Long Island, Garden of Eve. Each week, the farmers send us a report (tomatoes are in…potatoes are early…some harmless worms got to the sweet corn, etc) and let us know what to expect in the pick-up and why (last week everyone received double their normal amount of eggs because the chickens have been busy!), as well as tips for expanding the life of the fresh greens and flowers. They even offer farm tours, cooking classes, and childrens education programs at the farm. I made the pick-up signs last week and couldn’t help but add a little humor to them…what chickens don’t deserve a pat on the back every now and then?
The last few pick ups have included: tomatoes (regular, sungold, and cherry), potatoes, onions, purple/white/green peppers, hot peppers, sugar snap peas, basil, sweet corn, eggplant, broccoli, zucchini, arugula, kale, cilantro, fresh eggs, rhubarb, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, watermelons, sunjewel (honeydew) melon, and a beautiful mixed bouquet of sunflowers, celosia, and cleome. Heaven! As if that’s not enough, they also post a recipe page for cooking ideas for the weekly produce. I am guilty of ordering a lot of takeout, but having so much fresh produce really wipes that idea off the map. With no excuse NOT to cook, I immediately panic about how much produce I have to use in a relatively short amount of time. What to do? The obvious answer is to make a risotto with almost everything in it (see below). Yum. And per my father’s suggestion (he is an expert in the kitchen), I froze the extra. Oh, and I introduced my daughter to fresh blackberries and she ate an entire pint in one sitting…the girl has taste!
Even if you aren’t in a CSA, I urge you to find that a local farm stand or farmer’s market and support your local farmers. For those of you who are inspired to do so, here is a great guide to making your own farmer’s market bouquet. Happy Wednesday!
Last week, I continued working on my series of dream-like beach images. I love the ribbon of the white wave and the graceful line it forms. If we had the power to slow down a wave (thank you shutter speed), they would look this elegant. And for those of you that have spent any time on the “Grey Lady,” you will recognize the blurred line of ocean meeting fog on the horizon. Happy Friday!

I can’t believe I haven’t written about the Olympics just yet, but between air Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman’s parents, women’s volleyball, the SWIMMERS, judo?, and of course, table tennis, I am glued to the tv! I was especially happy tonight to see the U.S Women’s Soccer team bring home a gold in their World Cup rematch vs. Japan. Soccer (real football) has always been a huge part of my life. I started playing as soon as they would let me (5) and didn’t look back until the end of my college days. I even parlayed on a co-ed team, The Gossip Goals (we played on Monday nights), here in NYC for a few years until injuries took over. So watching Team USA’s sweaty, elated hugs brought back some happy memories. Plus, they received their purple-ribboned medals while sporting black warm-ups, which is obviously the best team color combo ever created. The record crowd (80, 203!) at Wembley stadium watched quite a contest. I may think Hope Solo is a bit too quick with her twittering and eye makeup application, but there is no denial that she is an awesome keeper. The most creative fan sign goes to a gent who wrote: “forget Han, make me Mr. Solo!” Congrats to these inspirational women on an amazing semi-final win vs. Canada and a well deserved final victory tonight.

Happy Olympic Thursday! What has been your favorite sport to watch?
P.S.- Yes, I’m giving myself permission to post these images of my tv from my I-Phone!
